Xingyiquan (Hsing I Ch'uan)
The Monkey is the third of the 12 Animals and is based on the Metal and Earth elements. It is one of the more active, and very often longest form of any of the other 12 Animal forms. The palm shapes used are both concaved and spear like. The bodily movements emulate a monkey when it turns side to side, advances and retreats, jumps and closes the gap.
The footwork is unique to the other animals, in that, some styles use four corners to organize the movements, while others utilize six angles. The shape of the movements of the two main forms, "Monkey Takes the Leash in its Mouth" and "Monkey Scrambles Up a Pole" emulate the written character in the Chinese calligraphy for Monkey.
This Hebei style of Hsing-I Ch'uan (Xing Yi Quan) is organized using 12 Animals that group and teach the martial characteristics of particular actions.
