Xingyiquan ( Hsing I Ch'uan): Dragon
The Dragon is the first of the 12 Animals and is mostly based on both the Metal and Water elements. The movements rise and fall like a wave and are both sinuous and agile at times and solid and compact at others. It combines metal and water primarily, with the hands drilling as they rise, and spiltting as they fall.
The form is set on one line and also suggests the Wood element, as well, especially when it bursts forth and the practitioner releases fa-jing (explosive force). This is in accordance with one of the earliest matrices of the phases, that being the polar version of Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth. The shape and the movement of the main form, the "Dragon Rises and Drops," as presented here, emulates the shape of the Chinese calligraphy for Dragon.
This Hebei style of Hsing-I Ch'uan (Xing Yi Quan) is organized using 12 Animals that group and teach the martial characteristics of particular actions.
